A lot of it depends on what you want to do with machine learning. For instance, we have a very good understanding of what is possible with neural networks. We can automatically learn, make predictions, and generally do things the human way.

We have no idea what the AI we will be talking about in 5 years will look exactly like. We don’t even know what the AI will look like in 1 year.
There are very few technologies that we don’t know how they will be used in the future. There are many that we have a pretty good idea, but when we try to implement them into our daily lives, we often find that we have to reinvent the wheel. And this is because we don’t know enough about the technology.

There’s a reason why even the most innovative companies today tend to build their products around the same technology. It’s the same reason why there is a huge market for the latest big tech startup. A company may create an innovative solution, but it may have to reinvent the wheel to get it to market.
The problem with this is that AI-building is an extremely difficult problem to solve. One might think that AI-building is just a bunch of guys sitting around a conference room (and who wouldnt want to) but actually the problem is incredibly complex. Even the best AI-building algorithms will have issues, the latest advances require careful programming and testing, and the biggest issue is what happens if you have a bad programming error.
The good news is that there are a ton of people who are very good at AI-building.
