Koskun Falls ́s high toughness means it can survive direct damage spells like Lightning Bolt, Terminate, or Lava Spike without dying in combat. This makes it an excellent defender against aggressive decks which try to kill you with big creatures before your deck gets going. But don’t forget about its ability to deal three points of damage to your opponent each turn.
Altar Golem ́s high toughness makes it an excellent defender for control decks against aggressive strategies, while also being a huge threat to the opponents life total if left unanswered in the early game.
Cauldron Dance is much stronger than its cost of five mana might suggest – with two copies you can deal six damage anywhere on the board! The downside is that at least one copy needs to be untapped and ready when casting Cauldron Dance, which means that tempo plays like Lightning Bolt are not possible afterward (unlike Koskun Falls).
Great Aurora deals three points of damage everywhere but provides no creature or land ramp effect, making it significantly weaker as a draft card and only really playable in a very aggressive deck.
Befuddle is an excellent tempo card, as it can turn a defensive situation into complete chaos for the opponent – but like all spells in this Draft Tier list, Befuddle has to be drawn and played at the right time or else it will not have much impact on either player’s board state.
Inexorable Tide may lack any sort of evasion ability, but its six toughness makes it one of the most difficult creatures to remove from play in Throne of Eldraine Limited (especially when paired with Great Aurora).
Theft Of Dreams combines nicely with cards that are strong late game threats such as Koskun Falls and Avalanche Giant by reducing their cost while also providing some early curve relief.
Some players may not be looking for removal spells, and there are a few cards in this Draft Tier list that can help fill these roles.
Lore Scholar is one of the best creatures at defending an allied creature – it will always give you as many blocks/attacks as your opponent has potential attackers. It also functions well with early game defenders like Koskun Falls or Sheer Drop.
The ability to grant evasion with Windblade Adept is what makes this card so powerful; playing defensively becomes much easier when armed with an unblockable flyer (as long as you have enough mana).
One might think Guard Duty would excel against aggressive decks because the high toughness lets me take more hits from opposing creatures, but its poor stats mean that it dies in combat against even the weakest of attackers.
The good thing about Deadly Exchange is that you can trade an underwhelming creature for one with a much better ability – and if my opponent has two creatures on board, I’ll always get to choose which goes away.
Dancing Blades is an incredibly powerful card when played early (before turn five), because it quickly becomes a deadly threat that opponents won’t be able to answer unless they have removal spells like Stormrider Spirit or Fiery Finish.
Lurking Horror needs time before it’s at its best; any player who tries using this as their only win condition will find themselves on the wrong side of things very quickly.
