Many people have a favorite version of the song “Only Love Can Break Your Heart” by Neil Young. Some prefer the original while others like one of the live versions he did in his later years. But what are some other great songs that share this theme? In this blog, we will explore 8 alternative versions of this song!
The first version is from the band My Bloody Valentine. With a sound similar to Neil Young, they created an indie rock rendition of this song on their album Isn’t Anything (1988).
The next version that we will explore comes from Paul McCartney and Wings. This one was released in 1973 as part of his solo career along with Linda McCartney.
Another great remake came out in 1979 when Johnny Thunders and Patti Palladin put together a punkish interpretation for their second album So Alone Together. They later rerecorded it for One More Time – Live! (1982) and Who Loves You? (1984). – Probably my favorite cover ever is by Fiona Apple on her 1999 debut Tidal which she released when she was only 16. She made it her own by adding a more pop-ish feel to the song with an acoustic guitar and lots of emotion in her voice.
In 2003, British singer Sade took on this lesser known Paul Simon tune from his 1972 album There Goes Rhymin’ Simon.
Finally, there is the cover by The Smiths which can be found on their “The Queen Is Dead” (1986). They did not include it as part of the regular record but instead released it on a 12 inch single that you could buy separately or get if you bought something else at HMV and other music stores back then!

Only Love Can Break Your Heart (Fiona Apple cover):
I’m only human after all, what’s a little hurt? I won’t let it show ’cause only love can break your heart.
Fiona Apple sings the song with lots of emotion and makes it sound more pop style than other versions! Definitely worth checking out if you’re into acoustic guitar music.
It doesn’t seem to matter much these days who we are or where we go, do people even care about us anymore? So they got their wars to wage, nobody knows which side is right, every day seems like somebody dies and then another good one goes too soon but at least there was no real harm done this time that I know now
Only love can break your heart.
This song has been covered by many artists but one of the most popular versions is from Jill Sobule (1995). It’s a slow and mellow version. Her voice sounds really soft so it makes you feel sad about what she is singing about. The video for this song shows her on stage playing guitar with some people in the background that are holding up pictures of their loved ones who have died due to violence (including murder, suicide, war). After watching this video I couldn’t help thinking how great love really is when all these people still care enough to sing such sorrowful songs even though they already know its not going to change anything because only love can break your heart!
The only love that can break your heart is the one you don’t share. Jill Sobule’s song about unrequited love has a sad, slow melody which works beautifully with her soft voice. The video for this song shows people who have died due to violence (like murder and suicide) while images of their loved ones are shown in the background holding up pictures of them too – it was very touching. After seeing this I couldn’t help but think how great love really is when all these people still care enough to sing such sorrowful songs even though they know nothing will change because only love can break your heart!
Only Love Can Break Your Heart: Alternative Versions
This week we’re taking on other versions of
songs that are about unrequited love.
This time we have a version of the song “Only Love Can Break Your Heart” by Jill Sobule, which tells the story of someone who has loved and lost.
The video for this song features people who died from violence (murder, suicide) holding pictures of their loved ones while images show them in memories with friends or lovers they left behind.
It’s really emotional to watch these people sing so sorrowfully yet still hold onto hope because only love can break your heart!
Feeling sad is normal when you’ve experienced loss but sometimes it feels like there’s no way out.
