The Bet in Craps: Understanding the Game and Maximizing Your Chances

Craps is a popular casino game that has been enjoyed by gamblers for centuries. It is a dice game that offers a wide range of betting options, making it both exciting and challenging. One of the key aspects of craps is the bet, which is the foundation of the game. In this article, we will explore the different types of bets in craps, their odds, and strategies to help you make informed decisions and increase your chances of winning.

The Basics of Craps

Before diving into the world of craps bets, let’s first understand the basic rules of the game. Craps is played with two dice, and the objective is to predict the outcome of the roll. The game is typically played in rounds, with each round consisting of two phases: the come-out roll and the point phase.

The Come-Out Roll

The come-out roll is the first roll of the dice in a round. The shooter, the person rolling the dice, must place a bet on either the “Pass Line” or the “Don’t Pass Line.” The Pass Line bet is a bet on the shooter winning, while the Don’t Pass Line bet is a bet against the shooter.

The Point Phase

If the come-out roll results in a 7 or 11, the Pass Line bet wins, and the Don’t Pass Line bet loses. If the come-out roll results in a 2, 3, or 12, the Pass Line bet loses, and the Don’t Pass Line bet wins. Any other number rolled becomes the “point,” and the game enters the point phase.

In the point phase, the shooter continues to roll the dice until either the point number is rolled again, resulting in a win for the Pass Line bet, or a 7 is rolled, resulting in a loss for the Pass Line bet. The Don’t Pass Line bet follows the opposite rules.

The Different Types of Bets in Craps

Craps offers a wide range of betting options, each with its own odds and potential payouts. Let’s explore some of the most common bets in craps:

Pass Line Bet

The Pass Line bet is one of the most popular bets in craps. It is a bet on the shooter winning and has a house edge of only 1.41%. To place a Pass Line bet, you must place your chips on the Pass Line before the come-out roll. If the come-out roll results in a 7 or 11, you win. If it results in a 2, 3, or 12, you lose. Any other number becomes the point, and you continue rolling until the point or a 7 is rolled.

Don’t Pass Line Bet

The Don’t Pass Line bet is the opposite of the Pass Line bet. It is a bet against the shooter winning and has a slightly lower house edge of 1.36%. To place a Don’t Pass Line bet, you must place your chips on the Don’t Pass Line before the come-out roll. If the come-out roll results in a 2 or 3, you win. If it results in a 7 or 11, you lose. A roll of 12 is a push, and the bet is returned. Any other number becomes the point, and you continue rolling until the point or a 7 is rolled.

Come Bet

The Come bet is similar to the Pass Line bet, but it can be placed at any time during the point phase. It has the same rules and odds as the Pass Line bet. To place a Come bet, you must place your chips in the Come area of the craps table. The next roll after placing the Come bet becomes the come-out roll for your bet.

Don’t Come Bet

The Don’t Come bet is the opposite of the Come bet. It can be placed at any time during the point phase and has the same rules and odds as the Don’t Pass Line bet. To place a Don’t Come bet, you must place your chips in the Don’t Come area of the craps table. The next roll after placing the Don’t Come bet becomes the come-out roll for your bet.

Odds Bet

The Odds bet is an additional bet that can be placed alongside the Pass Line, Don’t Pass Line, Come, or Don’t Come bets. It is a bet on the point number being rolled before a 7. The Odds bet has no house edge and pays true odds, making it one of the best bets in craps. The amount you can bet on the Odds bet depends on the casino, but it is typically limited to a multiple of your original bet.

Field Bet

The Field bet is a one-roll bet on the next roll resulting in a specific number. It pays even money for a roll of 3, 4, 9, 10, or 11 and 2:1 for a roll of 2 or 12. However, it has a high house edge of around 5.56%, making it a riskier bet compared to others.

Place Bets

Place bets are bets on specific numbers (4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10) to be rolled before a 7. Each number has its own odds and payouts, with the 6 and 8 having the lowest house edge of 1.52%. Place bets can be made at any time during the point phase.

Strategies for Maximizing Your Chances

While craps is a game of chance, there are strategies that can help you make more informed bets and increase your chances of winning. Here are some tips to consider:

Stick to the Pass Line and Don’t Pass Line Bets

The Pass Line and Don’t Pass Line bets have the lowest house edge in craps. By sticking to these bets, you can minimize your losses and maximize your chances of winning. These bets also have the advantage of being resolved quickly, allowing you to participate in more rounds.

Take Advantage of the Odds Bet

The Odds bet is one of the best bets in craps, as it has no house edge. Whenever possible, place an Odds bet alongside your Pass Line, Don’t Pass Line, Come, or Don’t Come bet. This bet increases your potential winnings without increasing the house edge.

Avoid Risky Bets

Bets like the Field bet may seem tempting due to their high payouts, but they also come with a high house edge. Avoid placing risky bets that have a higher chance of losing in the long run. Instead, focus on bets with lower house edges and better odds.
