If there’s one skill that I’ve always taught myself and developed and refined, it’s that of clean smarts. I’ve learned that it’s not always about being smart and neat, but smart and clean. I’ve also learned that it’s not about being neat and clean but smart and clean. Clean smarts is about being smart and smart about how we’re treating our homes and our relationships.

A few days back, we found out that the main reason for the ‘clean smarts’ theme was that it was an educational program. We didn’t really know what it was, but we were told that it was a book for kids. The title of this project was a real learning exercise for kids and teachers. The reason we decided to go with the ‘clean smarts’ theme is that it shows how kids can learn to make smart choices and make smart decisions.
For a long time we believed that kids should simply copy their parents and not think. If you see them doing that, you are going to be shocked. One of the first things that you will think is “Well, they are always messing up their hair, and they never do anything to their face. So they must be doing something good!” It is impossible to convince kids that they should be different, that they should be so smart, and that they should be so thoughtful.
At some point we stopped believing that parents were bad, that they just didn’t give their kids enough opportunity to learn. Now that kids are getting more and more opportunities to learn and develop themselves, we’ve come to realize that parents are really very bad at teaching their children anything. That is why so many of us believe that kids should be just like their parents. They shouldn’t even be called different.
It’s true that parents are bad at teaching their kids, and it’s equally true that parents are bad at teaching their kids anything. But there’s more to it than that, because parents can also be just as bad at teaching their kids smarts as they are at teaching their kids anything else.
Parents are bad at teaching their kids anything. What a shame! But, what parents teach their kids is more important than what they teach them. Parents are like teachers. They should be teaching, but they are not. Instead, they are like parents. They want their kids to be like them, but they are not. Instead, they want their kids to be them. And that’s a really sad state of things.
