Alessandro Monti is a well-known Italian citizen who was born in Milan. He studied at the University of Padua but was expelled from his studies due to poor health. His doctor advised him that he should move south where there would be more sunshine and less rain so Alessandro moved to Naples with plans to open up the first pasta factory outside of Northern Italy. When he arrived in Naples, however, local food producers weren’t happy about this competition and eventually successfully ran him out of town by threatening his family.
In order to get back at these people, Alessandro decided to open up a pasta company in their neighbourhood and he named it after them: “Pasta dei Quattro venti” which means “pasta of the four winds.” This new factory was an instant success for its innovative approach based on using local ingredients. The business grew so quickly that they had to start shipping all over Europe. They even set up offices in Paris and London where they could ship goods more efficiently by boat!
Alessandro Monti died in 1879 but his name has lived on as one of Italy’s first food companies with products still sold today around the world.
