I love this video. It’s from a competition in New York that was a lot of fun. In this particular competition, the winner’s meraki were grilled “at the top of their comfort zone”, which was great to see. They also had to use a knife to slice their meraki.

The part that really blew me away was when one of the girls showed the audience how she sliced her meraki in two. She sliced it into two pieces like a watermelon. I’m not sure how long a meraki is, but I think its somewhere between a big ol’ watermelon and a small orange. My mom told me that in Korea, the meraki is called a “gwan-gwan,” which sounds like a pretty awesome name.

The meraki is a native North American fish that grows to about a foot long. As they grow, their gills contract and they become smaller and stronger. If you don’t stop feeding them, they eventually die and can grow to about 6 pounds. Their meat is used as a staple in Korean cuisine.
