The lyrics to Nothing Can Change This Love are best known from the 1962 solo performance by Sam Cooke which reached number-one on both the Billboard Hot 100 chart and the Easy Listening charts in 1963.
A common version of this song includes only two lines: “Can love ever die? / And I said no” followed by “No matter how they try.” The poem seems to be based on the Biblical passage Ecclesiastes.
Can love ever die? And I said no,
No matter how they try.
They can pour away my morning coffee,
Run off with my wife and kids;
I still got a thing or two to say about this…love ain’t never died!
This song is very popular but not so well known the name of its author. In fact, it always seems to be attributed to Sam Cooke despite his death in 1964.
The same poem was used by Jerry Butler and The Impressions on their 1972 single “Nothing Can Change This Love”.
It has also been recorded by artists such as Gloria Gaynor (on her 1976 album Never Can Say Goodbye), Michael Henderson & Denise LaSalle (1978) James Ingram & Patti Austin for the 1985 film Pretty in Pink, and Will Downing with Marcia Hines on his 1994 album Soul Man.
In a 1982 interview with People magazine, Elton John said that he would never write lyrics again after writing this particular lyric .
Known for its catchy yet sorrowful melody, “Nothing Can Change This Love” tells the story of a man who has been hurt by love and is unable to recover from his pain. Cooke sings about how no matter what he does or where he goes, this love will never leave him. The song ends with an emotional vocal performance by Cooke as the full force of his despair becomes apparent. It is this last verse that gives listeners hope despite the tragedy in which they are listening to – nothing can change these feelings.”
The music video takes place at various points during Sam’s life: childhood, marriage and fatherhood (with wife Barbara Campbell), military service, early success as a singer with hits like “You Send Me”, later success with “Twistin’ The Night Away” and move to RCA.
“Nothing Can Change This Love” was written by Sam Cooke and produced by Hugo & Luigi. The song was released as a single on November 14th 1963 and became a top 20 hit for him in both the US (peaking at number 16) and UK (number 11). It is one of his biggest hits from this period.”

Actually, I enjoy playing all types of music. My favorite singer is Sam Cooke because he was really good at knowing how to sing ballads with just about any emotion in his voice.”Nothing Can Change This Love” (1963)
